Forensic Engineering and Science - Cranfield University
Aerospace Engineering, Class I - University of Sheffield As part of the final year for her first degree, Victoria carried out a group project, in conjunction with Rolls Royce plc, in the Design and Production of a Tuneable Particle Damper. The purpose of this project was to provide a solution to an ongoing vibration problem on gas turbine blades. This project came about after she undertook a work placement at Rolls Royce plc, Derby in the Whole Engine Modelling Department, analysing shear force and bending moments on the rotors on the Trent 900 gas turbine. She also conducted a study into the use of the computer package, iSIGHT, and its likely use to Rolls Royce. Her individual project was on the Design and Construction of a Mini-Wind Tunnel, which is intended for testing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). Victoria went on to study for a Master of Science degree in Forensic Engineering and Science, with an emphasis towards ballistics and explosives. Her final project was on the characterisation of samples of the improvised peroxide-based explosive, HMTD, an explosive that was reported to have been used in the London bombings in 2004. The aim of this was to reproduce samples of the explosive using recipes found on the internet in order to determine if there were any analytical methods that could determine any differences in the various syntheses. In September 2006, Victoria joined Hawkins as a Forensic Claims Validation Investigator. This work mainly involves investigating suspected fraudulent insurance claims either by inspection of the scene or by analysis of documents and photographs. Examples include paint spills, burn damage by cigarettes or irons and attempted break-ins. Since joining Hawkins, Victoria has also undertaken numerous research projects including conducting tests as set out by British Standards in relation to fire investigations and personal injury cases. She has also begun training in the investigation of road traffic accidents, personal injuries and engineering related cases and hopes to gain Chartered Engineering status through this work. Victoria is currently an Associate based in the Manchester office. |
